DISABILITAS DAN PANDANGAN MASYARAKAT

Sejak diperkenalkan pada tahun 1998, kini kata disabilitas telah banyak digunakan oleh masyarakat dan juga media massa baik koran maupun televisi. Beberapa organisasi penyandang cacat juga telah menggunakan kata disabilitas sebagai pengganti kata cacat dalam setiap tulisan maupun diskusi mereka. Bahkan Koran nasional seperti Harian Kompas telah sering menggunakan kata disabilitas dalam setiap tulisannya. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa kata disabilitas acceptable atau dapat diterima oleh publik.
Penggunaan kata disabilitas layak untuk dikaji ulang khususnya yang menyangkut tentang peran komunitas dalam menentukan istilah tersebut dan juga dampak positif yang timbulkan dari pergantian istilah penyandang cacat menjadi penyandang disabilitas. Mengambil begitu saja istilah dari luar kemudian menyesuaikan dengan kata di Indonesia tanpa mempertimbangkan aspek budaya, sosial, dan psikologis tentu merupakan tindakan yang kurang tepat. Apalagi kata disabilitas, ditingkat internasional juga masih mengundang kontroversi, sehingga banyak aktivis disabilitas international yang mengusulkan istilah yang lebih manusiawi; misalkan people with mobility problem,people with learning difficulties, dan lain sebagainya. mereka memiliki hak untuk menikmati kehidupan secara normal dan layak. Mereka mampu melakukan seperti yang orang lain lakukan, hanya caranya berbeda. Just like you, I’m normal. And just like me,you’re different…(Blindman Jack).
Kelompok disabilitas hingga kini masih menjadi kelompok marginal yang hak-hak dasarnya belum terpenuhi. Diskriminasi terhadap kelompok disabilitas terjadi dalam ruang lingkup negara dan sosial. Negara terlihat tidak serius menangani persoalan yang dihadapi oleh kaum disabilitas. Meskipun terdapat program pemberdayaan untuk kaum disabilitas melalui Departemen Sosial, namun program tersebut tetap tidak memiliki dampak yang cukup signifikan terhadap perbaikan mutu kehidupan kaum disabilitas di Indonesia. Pada ranah lain, masyarakat kita masih dibelenggu oleh prasangka-prasangka serta mitos yang negatif terhadap kaum disabilitas. Disabilitas sering dipandang sebagai individu yang lemah dan hanya patut untuk dibantu. Sementara sebagian masyarakat lain masih berkeyakinan bahwa kondisi disabilitas yang terjadi merupakan akibat dari perbuatan yang melanggar norma sosial dan agama.
Pandangan masyarakat inilah yang harus dirubah. Dengan adanya media internet yang dapat diakses oleh semua kalangan masyarakat dapat membantu merubah pandangan masyarakat mengenai kalangan disabilitas. Dengan aktifnya disabilitas dengan bantuan media internet, membutkikan bahwa kita tidak kalah dengan yang non disabilitas. Kita dapat melihat banyaknya software yang di ciptakan untuk membantu para tuna netra untuk dapat beraktivitas menggunakan computer dan hand phone. Dengan internet, kita juga dapat mengembangkan kreatifitas kita. Apalagi dengan adanya kartunet yang sekarang dapat merubah persepsi masyarakat mengenai disabilitas, diharapkan membuka cara memandang masyarakat. Saya rasa perlu juga untuk pendidikan mengenal website dan internet sehingga kita bisa berkompetisi di dunia maya.
